My old high school appears to be swirling around the toilet bowl, at the brink of being flushed away into the anals of government funded education. I walked in KHS on a "Curriculum Day" for teachers to catch up on grading, goals and undoubtedly, gossip and was surprised by how awkward it felt to walk thru my old stomping grounds. I looked to see where I had left my mark and the marks left by others and was mildly amused. What I found really entertaining was the nonchalant, apathetic attitude of some of the teachers. Granted, I place the blame for their miffed morale primarily on the shoulders of their leadership in administration. Nevertheless, I was appalled by what I heard them say. Actually, I was just appalled to hear them say it; secretly, I knew this to be true for years.
"We haven't gotten to getting [students] to college. We're just focused on getting them through. They can figure college out on their own."
Now while this is true, college is definitely a phase of life that takes a lot of self-discovery, hearing it from HS teachers was painstakingly honest. And we wonder why our students struggle with transitioning to college.. smh
